21 Questions, “Nick style”…

  One quick thing before we start:

  1. I’m workin a gig on Thursdays, which means I’m out all day. I will answer you guys’ comments when I get in front of a computer in the evening. 

   So I’ve been seeing a lot of the “21 Questions” business float across my Twitter timeline. They’re mostly random and I think they’re fun. So that’s what we’re doing today. It’s easy, breezy and I personally think it’ll help us get to know each other better. AND it might bring some people out of lurking so I can say hi! Oh, I’ll answer them too. I suppose it’s only right..

   1. Alarm goes off at 7:30am, what do you do?

 Wonder what day it is, and WHY the alarm is going off. (I never set an alarm)

    2. What’s a favorite childhood memory?

Jumpin on the bed to Levert’s “Casanova” and eating mangoes on the lawn in Jamaica.

   3. Favorite childhood cartoon? Do you watch cartoons as an adult?

   Tom & Jerry, Pink Panther, and Thundercats, then when I was a teen, “Animaniacs” Hell YES I watch cartoons as an adult. “The House of Tomorrow” and this one are personal faves.

   4. How did you find my blog? was it through someone else’s or because of Twitter? Do you have a blog? If yes, what’s it about and what’s the website? If no, what would it be about if you made one?

    umm.. you’re on my blog. So, “HI!” and welcome. Also, I wanted to create a new blog about my frugal shopping. I find the weirdest deals! 

   5. Do you currently do what you’re good at? Or what you’re passionate about? 

   Both. I’m passionate about writing although not so much when I have a deadline. And I’m better at writing (and imitating accents) than anything else I do.

   6. What’s an idiosyncrasy other people might find strange?

I’ll only lotion my feet, but not my legs. I’ve been better about this since I came back from DC, but there used to be a SERIOUS line of demarcation when the lotion ended and the ash began. I also cannot go to bed if there’s lotion/deodorant on me. 

   7. What’s a habit you think no one else has?

Only writing with one type of pen. I buy them in packs so I never run out. 

   8.  Among those who know you, what are you known for? What’s become your trademark?

  Being smart and silly. Also, my reactions to certain things are bigger than life. I try to make people smile. I also handwrite everything (except this blog)

   9. Do you prefer the country or the city? The beach or the mountains? 

  The country, but it’s gotta be close to the city. and I prefer the beach. It gets chilly up in the mountains mayne!

   10. What song INSTANTLY makes you smile? Whether with a memory or just because it’s THAT good? 

    “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”- Tears for Fears. It was hard narrowing this down because I have a lot of songs. But I INSTANTLY smile when I hear this song.

   11. The best Christmas present you’ve ever received?

     Wireless headphones from my boyfriend, circa 1999.

   12. What/who has been your biggest influence thus far?

   Mr Fass and Coach Whitten. History teachers in high school. They opened up my eyes to a love of European culture. And Professor Santiesteban, college English/Creative Writing teacher. She made me believe I could write.

   13. What is your best/biggest accomplishment so far?

   The day I purchased this blog name. And the day I fixed the brakes on my car. 

14. What’s something you want to change?

  The amount of times I don’t get out of the house. And my body shape. I’m working on both of these. 

15. What’s a book that has inspired you?

  The Bad Place- Dean Koontz. The Left Behind Series. Also, Portrait in Sepia- Isabel Allende. It was the first time I picked up on the beauty that is literature written by someone with english as a 2nd language. It’s difficult to explain. Also, my literature book from 3rd grade. Yes, I still have it.

16. Favorite childhood movie? Favorite movie as an adult? And yes, you can give me more than one genre.

  The Neverending Story and Flight of the Navigator. 500 Days of Summer, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (great script, perfectly filmed) Stranger Than Fiction (another great script) and Love Actually.

   Honorable Mention: Inception!! And Monsoon Wedding.

17. Do you think marriage is an antiquated concept? 

   No, I think people willing to put in the work is getting harder and harder to find.

18. What’s your life’s motto? What words or principle do you live by?

    “If I don’t believe it, who else will?” The principle I live by: “Question everything.” (It’s what I do)

19. What is something that’s become a “saying” of yours? 

    “I ain’t got that kinda time” and “cheese and bread!” I might also add “and dumplin” for extra “umph.” 

20. Do you have a “theme song?” 

   King of Anything- Sara Bareilles. and “Pretty Please, Love Me”- Estelle ft. Cee-Lo. They both speak to me on a certain level. I’m sure I can think of something better, but right now I can’t.

21. What would you want on your tombstone?

 I just tried to do the best I can with what it is I have.

    No. I’d be a music producer if I could.

    6. What’s an idiosyncrasy other people might find strange?
    I grind the inside of my cheeks with my teeth (I’m even doing it right now)

    I don’t think I have one that no one else has

    “You May Be Right” by Billy Joel, played at a water park I went to with my now fiancee’. Was a good time, and when I think of it I smile.

    When my parents got me the Atari (it’s a game console for you youngins who never heard of it)

    Jesus, My parents, my brothers, my grand parents, a slew of Teachers, and my basketball coaches

    Reading the Bible the whole way through, Living Past 25, Completing my Thesis, Earning Master’s Degree, Becoming an Omega Man, Bench Pressing 315

    My alarm goes off at 5:00. I shut it off and drag myself to the bathroom.

    The smell or a field being plowed. The mix of dirt and diesel fumes brings back memories. (We’ve talked about this before.)

    Ducktails. And hells yes I watch cartoons better than Housewives. Does anyone remember an old Nick cartoon called “City of Gold”?

    I found your blog, TDA’s, Tunde’s, Gem’s, LaLa’s, and a few others via VSB. I blog so hard (sometimes) at Up Here on Cloud (http://uphereoncloud9.wordpress.com)I’m also working on tumblr about comic books too.

    5. Do you currently do what you’re good at? Or what you’re passionate about?

    Yes, I am good at my job but I am by no means passionate about it.

    6. What’s an idiosyncrasy other people might find strange?

    I bite my bottom lip.I also crack my neck on command.

    7. What’s a habit you think no one else has?

    I carry my pocketknife everywhere.

    8. Among those who know you, what are you known for? What’s become your trademark?

    Being terse and very loyal.

    9. Do you prefer the country or the city? The beach or the mountains?
    The country all day. I’ll take a beach out of any setting.

    Nina Simone’s “In the Dark”. It’s a good song that has very good memories attached.

    11. The best Christmas present you’ve ever received?

    Miss Moneypenny’s hot a** gave me a coffee maker for Christmas one year.

    12. What/who has been your biggest influence thus far?

    My “what” is to be better. I have several who’s. Outside of my parents I take inspiration from many people I know.

    13. What is your best/biggest accomplishment so far?

    Getting the hell out of Allendale county.

    14. What’s something you want to change?

    Allendale county.

    15. What’s a book that has inspired you?

    “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe made me want to be a writer.

    16. Favorite childhood movie? Favorite movie as an adult? And yes, you can give me more than one genre.

    It would have to be a tie between the Indiana Jones movies and Back to The Future.

    17. Do you think marriage is an antiquated concept?

    No. Folks are trying to make working on a relationship an antiquated concept though.

    18. What’s your life’s motto? What words or principle do you live by?

    “I’m just a man, no more enlightened than any other.” It’s is from George Pelecanos’ novel “the Night Gardener”

    I have two. “I’m a Man” by Bo Diddley and “I’m a King Bee” It doesn’t matter if it is the Stones, Slim Harpo, or the Stone Foxes version.

      16. SHould this be the time I say I’ve never seen Back to the Future? I’ve seen bits and pieces. I know about a Flux Capacitator and there’s a Huey Lewis song in the movie. Basically, whatever they mentioned in episodes of “I Love the 80′s” is what I know.. Sadness, personified..

      7. I can understand that need for a pocketknife but somehow I imagine you not needing it for anything logical and it coming in handy because we’ve entered a zombie apocalypse.

      Bad Place was the one about the husband and wife detectives.. Their client was a man that would wake up in weird places. He was being hunted by his hermaphroditic brother.. and all sorts of freakiness ensues..

    17. No, not at all. I think marriage is just as valuable and sacred as before. I think a lot of people who decide to get married don’t necessarily have the idea of Forever in their heads.

    2. Best childhood memories are sitting on my grandma’s counter while she cooks and getting my hair braided and beaded by my mama.
    3. Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, Smurfs, and Jem- Yep still watch!

    5. I do what I’m good at but not what I’m passionate about.

    11. Every childhood christmas was phenomenal. As an adult, on our last christmas together my ex gave me the perfume I wore when he met me 10 yrs prior which I hadn’t worn since. I cried.

    13. My biggest accomplishment is the sum total of who & where I am, given where I came from.
    14. My career is something I’d like to change.

    Try and figure out how many additional minutes I can lay there and still make it to work by 8:30

    Making up songs and singing them at the top of my lungs with a towel on my head and my sisters singing back up…Im still pretty sure that the original ballad, Crying through my eyes is a hit waiting to happen
    3. Favorite childhood cartoon? Do you watch cartoons as an adult? Wow so many, Scooby doo, GI Joe she-ra, voltron, thudercats, kid video and of course, Jem and the Holograms
    Now I watch robot chicken, family guy, sponge bob, and Avatar

    Yes and no. I am good at what I do, I am not passionate about it though…currently thinking of making a huge shift

    My severe ADHD makes me lose track in the middle of thoughts or action…

    The fact that I don’t really have any Habits

    Ummm? Oh yeah the hubby got an automatic start installed on my car. I was like what the f!ck at first but man it is the most awesome gift on earf craig!!

    My 12th grade AP English teacher and My former manager
    13. What is your best/biggest accomplishment so far? My Child hands down
    14. What’s something you want to change?
    My eating habits I want to turn this fat to fab working on it.. off and on.

    Wow so many for so many different reasons, the first book that I can remember is ‘to be a slave” by Julius lester in elementary school. Things fall apart in high school, The God of Small things in college and my exposure to the American classics Faulkner, wolfe, hemingway

    Nope not at all. I think people who say this are lying to themselves and to others it might not be for everyone but its definitely not out of date

    Earning my scars. In other words the summers when I used to wrestle with my cousins and the neighborhood boys in the circle. Also bike riding and playing tag. Just being a kid

    All of the toons on the 4pm block. Darkwing Duck, Tailspins, Chip and Dale, Ducktails (woo hoo!! LOL), Bonkers. All of them. I still watch cartoons. My fav now is Avatar

    Found you through VSB. Happiest day of my life!! :-) Unfortunately I don’t have a blog but if I did it would definitely be about my random thoughts. More journalistic in nature with a splash of pop culture and music.

    5. Do you currently do what you’re good at? Or what you’re passionate about?

    Yes/No. I’m not where I wanna be because I’m still trying to figure that out..but I try and mostly excel at anything I put my mind to.

    6. What’s an idiosyncrasy other people might find strange?

    I bite the inside of my cheek and lip when I’m in my zone.

    7. What’s a habit you think no one else has?

    Cleaning at night. Especially the bathroom

    Making a long story longer. LOL I got tales for dayyyyys. But I think my trademark would be my sense of humor and my potty mouth

    9. Do you prefer the country or the city? The beach or the mountains?

    No preference…just a nice balance will do. Mountains allll day! I hate sand with a passion

    4. Well I know you, but I don’t blog surf as much as I used to. Lala mentioned it on the twittuhs the other day so I thought I’d check it out. I don’t blog, although I have a wordpress site. I just haven’t found the energy. I do write though… finishing up a fiction novel hopefully by summer’s end.

    5. Yes; I do what I’m good at. Am I passionate about it is a whoooole ‘nother thing. I think I wanna see a career therapist. Do they have those? I need to find my ‘true north’ there are so many things I am passionate about I think I need to narrow it down. =/
